AK48 Explains the 3 categories of Girls- Lepa-Medium-Orobo

AK48 was born Akin Akintunde in the late '80s in Lagos, NIGERIA, the eldest of three children and the only male child. He briefly attended High School in Surulere, Lagos before departing for the United States as a teen.

AK48 started rapping in 2001 in secondary school where he would engage in freestyle battles with classmates and also compose songs off-head while others beat the desks to create a rhythm. He did not really take music seriously at that time even though he had a lot of people continually tell him that he had the potential to become relevant in the music industry. He started composing songs around 2004 and did some recording which never got released.

AK48 he has since returned to rapping as of 2008 and is currently working on a mixtape called Ground Zero: Tha Sequel which is slated for release later this year Tracks such as 'Emi', 'Gbono Feli freestyle' to mention a few have been released and featured on websites and have also garnered some positive reviews so far (http://www.notjustok.com/2009/07/18/ak48-light-up-naija/#comments) ,

Goodluck Janothan, who is an alumni of the University was present at the event where Ex- Governor Donald Duke was given a honorary doctorate. Late 2005 was the year he got to record his first singles titled "Jah Partey"(God's Party),"More than enough" and You're the one"...The single"Jah Partey" got radio airplay and immediately moved to no.1 on the local hiphop/r&b charts,that made Rogers a household name in Croc city and performed in many school and church concerts.He went into musical production later that same year(2005) and his sounds went even further than his songs coz he became the pioneer of what is known as "The mobile studio" in croc city..

Rogers's production gained him recognition both home and abroad and has worked on thousands of sounds and a lot of known and upcoming artistes both in croc city,Abuja,Lagos,Minna,Jos, Adamawa and lots more....Rogers recorded a lot of rap songs,r&b and gospel,when asked when his album was gonna drop he always replied "i'm still doing audios for practice"..He moved to Kuala Lumpur Malaysia in 2008 to further his studies..he hadn't the chance to do a record of his own coz of academic demands and all but just like before his sounds went further.Nevertheless he's done collaborations with artistes in Malaysia such as A2B(Afro Asian Brothazz), YoungStunna,Aklo,Freewill a.k.a Geerules,Namoh and lots more...

Lil Wayne reportedly undergoes 8 root canals

Lil Wayne’s jail sentence was delayed for dental surgery — and the rapper made sure he used it to have everything taken care of all at once.

According to TMZ, the Tuesday dental surgery provided the MC with a whopping eight root canals. The procedure lasted eight hours and also included several redone tooth implants, additional implants and work on his grill and remaining teeth.

A rep for the rapper did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Access Hollywood.

Lil Wayne will head to jail on March 2 to serve out his year-long sentence at Riker’s Island.

His latest album, the rock effort “Rebirth,” was released earlier this month, and there will be no shortage of the rapper while he’s behind bars — according to MTV News, he shot footage for nine videos over a marathon weekend earlier this month.

And now, the NY Post is saying that Jigga may have done some CORRUPT dealings with the Governor of New York. They say that Jay and the Governor and the Wall Street bankers over at AIG decided to pull some kind of scam, where they would secretly grant themselves the exclusive rights to a new casino in New York.

Here’s some excerpts from the paper

In early September, AEG Chairman Richard Mays approached Jay-Z through his business partners and asked whether he would be interested in joining the consortium -- which at the time ranked last among six bidders seeking the lucrative project. . .

"[NY Governor] Paterson directly told [Las Vegas businessman Steve] Wynn he needed to have a minority partner, so he went and got Jay-Z. But when Wynn pulled out, Jay-Z was without a home," a source told The Post.

"AEG went and grabbed Jay-Z after his deal with Steve Wynn fell through." AEG jumped at the chance to recruit Jay-Z, who has become increasingly close to Paterson, sources said. The two dined together in June and hung out in the Hamptons.

And it gets even WORSE. According to the paper, the FEDS are investigating this whole thing, and if they find out somebody did something wrong – they throwing people IN JAIL!!!!

Sometime last year the chairman of the editorial board of Guardian Newspapers,Reuben Abati wrote an article called A Nation’s Identity Crisis, the title is quite self explanatory.In this article he mentioned a few things about how Nigerians and artistes embrace foreign identity’s and so on and he particularly mentioned Banky W’s name amongst others but Banky W being Mr Capable couldnt take the insult just like that and decided to write back and you know how our culture is,there are certain things you do not say to elders but oh well,Banky gave Mr Reuben a piece of his mind.

Well a few months down the line, at the Future Awards which held on last Sunday(07-02-10) ,Banky W apologised so yh Banky good boy..lol

A Nation’s Identity Crisis by Reuben Abati
You may not have noticed it: Nigeria is suffering from an identity crisis imposed on it in part by an emergent generation of irreverent and creative young Nigerians who are revising old norms and patterns. And for me nothing demonstrates this more frontally than the gradual change of the name of the country. When Flora Shaw, Lord Lugard’s consort came up with the name, Nigeria in 1914, she meant to define the new country by the strategic importance of the Niger River. And indeed, River Niger used to be as important to this country as the Nile was/is to Egypt. We grew up as school children imagining stories about how Lugard in one special romantic moment, asked his mistress to have the honour of naming a new country in Africa. Something like: “Hello, sweetheart, what name would you rather give the new country that I am creating?”

“Let me give it a thought? ….Awright, how about Ni-ge-ria darling?”

“That would do. That would do. How thoughtful, my fair lady? You are forever so dependable”

And the name stuck and it has become our history and identity. But these days, the name Nigeria is gradually being replaced by so many variants, that I am afraid a new set of Nigerians may in the immediate future not even know the correct spelling of the name of their country. For these Nigerians whose lives revolve mostly around the internet and the blogosphere, the name Nigeria has been thrown out of the window. Our dear country is now “naija” or “nija”. What happened to the “-eria” that Ms Shaw must have thoughtfully included? The new referents for Nigeria are now creeping into writings, conversations, and internet discourse. I am beaten flat by the increasing re-writing of the country’s name not only as naija or nija, but consider this: “9ja”. Or this other name for Nigeria: “gidi”. There is even a television programme that is titled “Nigerzie”. In addiiton, Etisalat, a telecom company has since adopted a marketing platform that is titled: “0809ja.” Such mainstreaming of these new labels is alarming.

This obviously is the age of abbreviations. The emerging young generation lacks the discipline or the patience to write complete sentences or think through a subject to its logical end. It is a generation in a hurry, it feels the constraints of space so much, it has to reduce everything to manageable, cryptic forms. This is what the e-mail and text message culture has done to the popular consciousness. Older generations of Nigerians brought up on a culture of correctness and compeleteness may never get used to the re-writing of Nigeria as “9ja”. Language is mutatory, but referring to the motherland or the fatherland in slang terms may point to a certain meaninglessness or alienation. What’s in a name? In Africa, names are utilitarian constructs not merely labels. Even among the Ijaw where people bear such unique names as University, Conference, FEDECO, Manager, Heineken, Education, Polo, Boyloaf, Bread, College, Summit, Aeroplane, Bicycle, Internet – there is a much deeper sense to the names. But the name Nigeria means nothing to many young Nigerians. They have no reason to respect the sanctity of the name. They don’t know Flora Shaw or Lord Lugard, and even if they do, they are likely to say as Ogaga Ifowodo does in an unforgettable poem: “God Punish you, Lord Lugard.” Eedris Abdulakarim summarises the concern of young Nigerians in one of his songs when he declared: “Nigeria jagajaga, everything scata, scata”

The post-modernist, deconstructive temper of emergent youth culture is even more manifest in the cynical stripping to the bones character of today’s Nigerian hip-hop. It is marked by a Grunge character that shouts: non-meaning and alienation. On my way to Rutam House the other day, I listened at mid-day to a continuous stream of old musical numbers from 93.7 Radio FM. Soulful, meaningful tunes of Felix Lebarty, Chris Okotie (as he then was), Mandy Ojugbana, Christy Essien-Igbokwe, Onyeka Onwenu, Sony Okosun, Alex O, Ras Kimono, Majek Fashek, Evi Edna-Ogoli, Bongos Ikwue, Veno Marioghae, Uche Ibeto, Dora Ifudu, Mike Okri, Dizzy K. Falola, and Tina Onwudiwe. Onyeka Onwenu sang; “One love, keep us together”. Veno Marioghae sang: “Nigeria Go Survive”. Even in the romantic offerings like Chris Okotie’s “I need someone, give me your love”, or Felix Lebarty’s “Ifeoma, Ifeoma, I want to marry you, give me your love” and Stella Monye’s “Oko mi ye, duro ti mi o”, or Tina Onwudiwe’s award-winning “Asiko lo laye”. there was so much meaning and polish.

This was in the 80s. That generation which sang music under its real names, not abbreviations or slangs, was continuing, after the fashion of T.S. Eliot’s description of “Tradition and the Individual Talent”, a pattern of meaning that dates back to traditional African musicians and all the musicians that succeeded them: S. B. Bakare, Victor Olaiya, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey, Dan Maraya of Jos, Osita Osadebey, Ayinla Omowura, Victor Uwaifo, Geraldo Pino, Rex Lawson, I. K. Dairo, Haruna Ishola, Yusuf Olatunji, Inyang Henshaw, Tunji Oyelana, Bobby Benson, Tunde Nightingale, and even the later ones: Shina Peters, Dele Abiodun, Y.K. Ajao, Ayinde Barrister, Kollington Ayinla, Batile Alake, Sir Warrior, Moroccco Nwa Maduko, Orlando Owoh, Salawa Abeni, KWAM I (Arabambi 1 and please include his disciples- Wasiu Alabi Pasuma et al), Oliver de Coque (Importer and Exporter…), Ayefele, Atorise …. But there has been a terrible crisis in the construction of music. The children, grandchildren and great grandchildren of these ancestors have changed the face and identity of Nigerian music. As a rule, gospel musicians, given the nature of their form, sing meaningful lyrics, but the airwaves these days have been taken over by the children of “gidi”,”naija”, “nija”, “nigerzie” and “9ja”. I listen to them too, but everyday, I struggle to make meaning out of their lyrics.

Music is about sense, sound, shape and skills. But there is an on-going deficit in all other aspects except sound. So much sound is being produced in Nigeria, but there is very little sense, shape and skills. They call it hip-hop. They try to imitate Western hip pop stars. They even dress like them. The boys don’t wear trousers on their waists: the new thing is called “sagging”, somewhere below the waist it looks as if the trouser is about to fall off. The women are struggling to expose strategic flesh as Janet Jackson once did. The boys and the girls are cloaked in outlandish jewellery and their prime heroes are Ja-Rule, Lil’Wayne, Fat Joe, P. Diddy, 50 Cents, Ronz Brown, Chris Brown, Sean Kingston, Nas, Juelz Santana, Akon, Young Jeezy, Mike Jones, T-Pain, F.L.O-RIDA, Will.I.am, Beyonce, Rihanna, Ciara, Keri Hilson, Jay-Z, Ace hood, Rick Ross, Birdman, Busta Rhymes, Cassidy, Chamillionaire, Soulja Boy, Young Joc, Kanye West, R. Kelly, Kevin Rudolph, T.I.P-king of the South, Ludacris, Plies-The real goon, The Game, Young Rox, Flow killa, Osmosis (2 sick), Flow-ssik, Raprince, Bionic, Fabulous, Jadakiss, Nas, Swiss Beatz, Dj Khaled, Maze, Yung Buck, Maino, MoBB Deep, Lloyd Banks, Olivia, Lady Gaga… Well, God Almighty, we are in your hands.

And so the most impactful musicians in Nigeria today, the ones who rule the party include the following: D’Banj, MI, Mode Nine, Sauce kid, Naeto C, Sasha, Ikechukwu, 9ice, Bouqui, Mo’cheddah, Teeto, P-square, Don-jazzy, Wande Coal, 2-face, Faze, Black Face, Dr. Sid, D’prince, K-Switch, Timaya, Dj-Zeez, Dj Neptune, Banky w., Big bamo, Art quake, Bigiano, Durella, Eldee, Kelly Hansome, Lord of Ajasa, M.P., Terry tha rapman, Weird MC, Y.Q., Da grin, kel, Roof-top Mcs, Pype, Niga Raw, Ghetto p., Kaka, Kaha, Terry G, Ill Bliss, Zulezoo, Pipe, Dj Jimmy jatt, X-project, Konga, Gino, Morachi… Well, the Lord is God. These are Nigerian children who were given proper names by their parents. Ikechukwu bears his real name. But who are these other ones who have since abandoned their proper names? For example, 9ice’s real name is Abolore Akande, (what a fine name!), Tu face (Innocent Idibia), Sauce Kid (Babalola Falemi), D’Banj (Dapo Oyebanjo), Banky w. (Bankole Willington), P-Square (Peter and Paul), MI (Jude Abaga), Timaya (Enetimi Alfred Odom), Sasha (Yetunde Alabi), Weird MC (Adesola Idowu). But why such strange names? They don’t sing. They rap. Most of them don’t play instruments, they use synthetic piano.

At public functions, they mime. They are not artists, they perform. They are not necessarily composers, they dance. The more terrible ones can’t even sing a correct musical note. They talk. And they are all businessmen and women. They are more interested in commerce and self-advertisement, name recognition, brand extension and memory recall! They want a name that sells, not some culturally conditioned name that is tied down to culture and geography. But the strange thing is that they are so successful. Nollywood has projected Nigeria, the next big revelations are in hip hop.

Despite the identity crisis and the moral turpitude that we find in Nigeria’s contemporary hip-hop, the truth is that it is a brand of music that sells. Nigeria’s hip hop is bringing the country so much international recognition. All those strange names are household names across the African continent, so real is this that the phrase “collabo” is now part of the vocabulary of the new art. It speaks to an extension of frontiers. In Nigeria, it is now possible to hold a party without playing a single foreign musical track, the great grand children of Nigerian music are belting out purely danceable sounds which excites the young at heart. But the output belongs majorly to the age of meaningless and prurience. The lyrics says it all.

Rooftop MC sings for example: “Ori mi wu o, e lagi mo”. This is a very popular song. But all it says is: “my head is swollen, please hit it with a log of wood.” X-Project sings: “Lori le o di gonbe (2x), e so fun sisi ologe ko ya faya gbe, ko ya faya gbe, file, gbabe, se be, bobo o ti e le, wo bo nse fe sa hale hale niwaju omoge, ha, lori le odi gonbe, …..sisi ologe ki lo di saya o, so fun mi ki lofe, o wa on fire o….” Now, what does this mean in real terms? But let’s go to Naeto C: “kini big deal, kini big deal, sebi sebi we’re on fire”, or D’Banj: ” my sweet potato, I wanna make you wife, I wanna make you my wife o, see I no understand o, cause I dey see well well, but dey say love is blind, see I never thought I will find someone like you that will capture my heart and there will be nothing I can do….”. Yes, we are in the age of sweet potato. And so Art quake sings: “E be like fire dey burn my body, e je ki n fera, oru lo n mu mi. Open your hand like say you wan fly away. Ju pa, ju se, ka jo ma sere, alanta, alanta.”

And here is Zulezoo, another popular Nigerian musical team: “Daddy o, daddy, daddy wen you go for journey, somebody enter for mummy’s house, person sit down for mummy bed, person push mummy, mummy push person, mummy fall for bed yakata, daddy, o daddy, the man jus dey do kerewa kerewa…kerewa ke” And Dj-Zeez: “ori e o 4 ka sibe, ori e o 4 ka sibe, 4 ka sibe, 4 ka sibe”. And MI: “Anoti, anoti, anoti ti, anoti titi.” And Konga: “Baby konga so konga, di konga, ileke konga, ju pa pa, ju pa, konga, ju pa pa, ju pa, sibe”.. And 9ice: “gongo a so, kutupu a wu, eni a de ee, aji se bi oyo laari; oyo o se bi baba enikan, kan, i be double now, aye n lo, a mi to o, gongo a so, oti so o, e wo le e wo enu oko…” Or Tony Tetuila: “U don hit my car, oyinbo repete, u don hit my car o”. Or Weird MC: “Sola lo ni jo, lyrics lori gangan, awa lo ni jo”. Sheer drivel. So much sound, little sense. Is this the future? Maybe not.

Most of the music being produced now will not be listenable in another five years and this perhaps is the certain fate of commercial art that is driven by branding, show and cash. But we should be grateful all the same for the music, coming out of Nigeria also at this time in the soul, gospel, hip, hop genre: the music that is of Femi Anikulapo-Kuti, Lagbaja, Asa (there is fire on the mountain/and no one seems to be on the run/ there is fire on the mountain now…”), Ara, Sam Okposo, Dare, Sunny Neji, Infinity (now a broken up team), African China, Alariwo of Afrika…. We suffer nonetheless in music as in the national nomenclature, an identity crisis. A country’s character is indexed into its arts and culture, eternal purveyors of tones and modes. Nigerian youths now sing of broken heads, raw sex, uselessness and raw, aspirational emotionalism. A sign of the times? Yes, I guess.

I find further justification in the national anthem, many versions of which now exist. I grew up in this same country knowing only one way of singing the national anthem: from “Nigeria we hail thee” to “Arise o Compatriots”. The singing of the national anthem is supposed to be a solemn moment. Arms clasped by the side, a straight posture, and the mind strictly focussed on the ideals of patriotism and nationalism. Stillness. Nobody moves. And the national song is rendered in an unchanging format. But not so any longer. There are so many versions of the Nigerian national anthem these days. Same lyrics but different musical rhythms. I have heard the national anthem sung in juju, in fuji, in hip hop, in Ishan’s igbagbolemini, in acapella mode, even reggae. I attended an ocassion once, the rendition of the national music was so enthralling, people started dancing. Even the photographers and cameramen danced with their cameras. For me that was the ultimate expression of the people’s cynicism. The prevalent mood is as expressed by Dj-Zeez: “ori e 4 ka sibe, 4 ka sibe”: an epigrammatic, onomatopoeic, market-driven diminution of language as vehicle and sign. What kind of people are we? A dancing nation? Dancing and writing away our frustrations and caring little about sense, in this country that is now known as “naija”, “nija”, “9ja”, “nigerzie,” “gidi”?

Dear Sir,

In the immortal words attributed to P.T. Barnum, “I don’t care what the newspapers say about me, at least spell my name right.” My name IS Banky W, full name being Olubankole Wellington. Not Willington, as you stated in your article entitled “A Nation’s Identity Crisis”. I read the piece repeatedly, and found that misspelling my name wasn’t the only error. At it’s worst, the article seemed like an attempt to discredit and slander an entire generation of artistes and consumers, and at best it came across as having some valid points but being grossly misinformed, prejudiced, and hypocritical; definitely not what we would expect of a highly regarded publication as The Guardian, or from a person in Mr Abati’s position.

In the very least, the article warrants a well-informed response. I have little doubt in my mind that it will generate a slew of responses, positive and negative, and as one of the many subjects that was mentioned in the write-up, I feel compelled to voice my opinion (with all due respect) on some of the issues that were raised in your piece. What I’m going to attempt to do is to directly address issues that stood out and resonated most with me.

The writer asked “What’s in a name?” and went on to honor a “…generation which sang music under its real names, not abbreviations or slangs”; this would have been a valid point if he had not himself mentioned Greats like King Sunny Ade (real name: Sunday Adeniyi), I.K. Dairo (Isaiah Kehinde Dairo), and Ebenezer Obey (Real name: Ebenezer Remilekun Aremu Olasupo Fabiyi- Wow!!!). We could also point out other legends like Ras Kimono and Majek Fashek as others who, for creative or other reasons, saw it fit to have stage names that happen to differ from what’s on their passports. Shortening of full names and/or the crafting of stage names is not something new from our generation of artistes that “lack the discipline or the patience to write complete sentences” as you said; rather, it’s the creative right of an artiste to go by whatever moniker he sees fit. And if we want to talk about the names of today, we can highlight a few: Eldee – actually L.D. which stands for Lanre Dabiri, similar to Isaiah Kehinde Dairo’s transition to I.K. Dairo. Naeto C and Banky W are simply short forms of their full names. In my case, my father’s nickname among his friends is actually Banky as well.

Furthermore, on the topic of Names and abbreviations let’s set a few things straight. Nigerzie is actually spelt Nigezie and is not an abbreviation for Nigeria. It’s a TV Show, much like Soundcity or Hip TV, except they choose to incorporate “representing Nigeria” in their name. It’s like the “United Colors of Bennetton”, or DKNY, both companies that choose to represent their locations or origins in their name. Also, for the record, Gidi doesn’t mean Nigeria either. It’s a term for Lagos… coined from “Las Gidi”. And as far as the popular term “Naija” goes, who remembers Shina Peters singing “♫ Naija lo wa yi o o o, wa jo, afro juju lo gb’ode ♫” I hate to point out that our generation did not come up with that term… the “golden age” that you long for did.

As an editorial head of a National Newspaper, you owe it to your public to at least do proper and accurate research before printing an article. The risk in not doing so, is you might unknowingly mislead your readers, and you might actually come across as being ignorant or out of touch. A quick look at all the reference names of artistes and songs mentioned in the article goes to show that the author was sadly way off base in his accusations and examples. For instance, to make a point on how today’s Nigerian artistes lyrics are meaningless and prurient, he referenced the Rooftop MC’s song “La Gi Mo”. What he failed to realize or crosscheck, is that the said song is probably one of the most meaningful and important songs that have been released in the last few years on the Nigerian Music Scene. The Rooftop MC’s are actually a Rap Group that leans to the Gospel or at least Socially Conscious side of music, and their songs always have a positive message. That song itself talks about the errors we make by trying to take God’s glory for our success… getting caught up in the limelight and asking God to bring you back to reality to know that HE deserves the praise for where you are.

The author mentioned other songs like D’banj’s “Fall in Love”, and doesn’t realize how hypocritical he sounds by attempting to ridicule some of our most popular love songs. Felix Liberty sang “Ifeoma, ifeoma, I want to marry you”, D’banj sang “Omo U don make me fall in love” and Banky W sang “Till my dying day, I’ll love you”. Barring a difference in musical styling, are these songs not cut from the same cloth? Why can’t someone in Mr Abati’s position be proud of the fact that at Nigerian and African Weddings nowadays, couples are choosing these songs to mark their first dances instead of previous choices like “Endless Love”? Why can’t we appreciate that the days of going to Nigerian Parties and clubs and celebrating to foreign music “all night long” are long gone? Despite these facts, you still see International festivals and concerts being held in Nigeria where the foreign acts are paid 30 to 40 times what some of our biggest stars are allowed to charge.

I have to disagree with the author’s views. We are not all one and the same, but we ARE artistes. We may sing, rap, dance, mime, perform, play instruments or whatever else; but we are artistes. And Composers. And musicians. We may not all play the piano or the guitar, but neither does Michael Jackson, arguably the world’s greatest artiste/entertainer. That’s why he teamed up with producer Quincy Jones to create some of the best music anyone had ever heard. We have our own producers that have shaped Nigerian sound…people like Cobhams Asuquo, Don Jazzy, I.D. Cabasa, Dr Frabz, Tee-Y mix, Eldee, Terry G etc. That list goes on. These music minds are no less credible than those of Mr Abati’s time, like the great Laolu Akins.

Far be it from us to claim that we are perfect and flawless in our art… we know that we are still growing and have lots of areas to improve, but the truth of the matter is we have worked very hard to create the industry we have now, and some people choose to criticize and lambaste most of us, instead of helping and teaching us. That is unfair. Yes, some artistes sag their jeans… however, a glance at the pages of THISDAY style or the recently concluded awards shows will show you very clearly that others wear three-piece suits and traditional attires just as proudly, myself included. This music industry that you have very clearly disapproved of has partnered with and given rise to the fashion industry in Nigeria as well. Just ask Designers like Mai, Babs Familusi (Exclamations Couture), the Okunorens, Muyiwa Osindero and countless others. Everything from the t-shirts and jeans rappers wear, to the shoes and suits are made by young Nigerians, where in previous years people preferred to shop in London. The youth-driven industries in Entertainment and Fashion have teamed up to thrust Nigeria into the world’s positive spotlight, when for many years our dear country was mostly known for corruption, lack of infrastructure, and security issues.

Our country has not yet given us steady electricity, adequate education, safety from armed robbers or standard healthcare, yet artistes have risen like the Roses that grow from Concrete… and these very artistes love and represent their country proudly on a global stage. This music industry has given hope, jobs and income to countless youth of today. We are Rappers, Singers, Producers, Sound Engineers, Managers, Promoters, Marketing Consultants, Record Label Owners and we will not apologize for making the best of our circumstances; and all this in spite of the fact that we have Marketers that exploit but refuse to pay for our Musical pieces, Royalties and Publishing income that hitherto has been non-existent, a Government that is just now very slowly starting to enforce anti-piracy laws, and Event Organizers that would rather pay 50 Cent One Million US Dollars than give D’banj or P-Square 5 Million Naira.

You were right on some counts. We ARE businessmen and women, and we ARE interested in extending name recognition and brand extension. You were also right in that we look up to people like Jay-Z, who took their music and created multimillion-dollar empires. Since when did ambition and desire to succeed against all odds count against a person’s moral character? Shouldn’t we be encouraged to pay more attention to the business side of “Show Business”? Shouldn’t we want this music industry to provide for our future and the futures of our children?

We know we have a moral responsibility when it comes to our Creative works. Some of us pay more attention to it than others, and there is lots of ground to cover up. But how about a little appreciation and help, instead of trying to tear us down and discredit us? Time will tell whose music will last and become evergreen, but it is not in anyone’s place to judge; and for the record, can we just accept that fact that hip hop music is an artform that is probably here to stay… I mean for goodness sake the Grammy’s has!! Instead of fighting the change, we should learn to embrace it. I thank God for people like the great Adewale Ayuba that have reached across to our generation to collaborate with, bridge the gap, and help us improve.

We want to learn but your generation has to teach. We want to read but the Government must provide libraries. We want to go to school but the lecturers keep going on strike. We want to travel but previous generations messed up so they won’t give out visas. Most of prefer having our own live bands but the income needed to support that is not forthcoming.

You speak of meaninglessness and prurience, identity crisis and moral turpitude. You praise Legends like Fela Anikulakpo-Kuti and you ridicule us. 9ice does not drink or smoke. eLDee is married to one wife. Olu Maintain does not drink. Naeto C is currently obtaining his Masters’ degree in England. The ironic thing is, we look up to and praise your generation too. You seem to forget that Baba Fela had 27 wives, smoked marijuana in public, was himself half naked at shows (as well as the women around him) and allegedly died of HIV. However we look past what some may consider shortcomings and respect and emulate the immense contributions he made to our history. We are in awe of him despite personal choices that some may or may not agree with. All we are asking for is to be appreciated and afforded similar tolerances.

You danced to Shina Peters. Let us dance to our music. And for the record: for every “Anoti” by MI, he has a “Crowd Mentality” or a “Talk about it”. For a Naeto C’s “Ki Ni Big Deal”, he has a “The Devil is a Liar”. Just because an artiste uses a particular song to promote his album for commercial reasons, doesn’t mean they should be judged on that alone. Anyone that is familiar with the cost of promoting an album (videos, press, etc) would know that you end up making hard decisions in terms of what you have to push and promote, for your best chance at success. I suggest that you buy whole albums and look at the body of work. Listen to the entire CD’s. I think you’ll find that more often than not, Nigerian artistes are doing a pretty good job of representing this great Country of Nigeria. Naija Till We Die. Yes Boss.

Nigerian Worst Albums In 2009...

By now, we’ve all poured over, ruminated on and argued about the incessant year-end Best Of lists, but overlooked are the impending horrors that the music industry has secretly conspired to inflict upon us during these distracting times. Only by scouring the depraved depths of major label press releases and gluing one’s ear to the money grubbing grapevine of gratuitous drivel does the warning become clear. On the basis and criteria of content and commercial success, Here are the 12 + 1 Worst Albums of 2009, the oncoming detritus to avoid.

OBIWON – THE REBIRTH

Obiwon’s The Rebirth is laced with R&B-tinged melodies and lame hooks. The production overshadows rhymes on most of the album. At the end of the day, we’re left with an album that’s listenable but lacking in lyrical firepower. His comeback effort fell short of expectations; the whole album lacked the same firepower that graced his earlier discs. He then goes ahead to shower the album with some of the most unbecoming invectives like “this is a muted disaster”, “poorly thought-out tracks”, “this is a lazy effort” and “the choruses are nothing but jokes”, among other sardonic remarks.

STEEL – MIRAGE

Steel, an artiste who shares his surname with one of the hardest metals known to man, Steel’s image is ironically as soft as cotton candy. Armed with a Mohawk and a bucket full of lip gloss, Steel first caught our attention with the lead single ‘Omoge’. Steel exhibited evidence of some lyrical ability and a decent sense of humour in tow – ‘Come Vero… go ask Caro… She go say I sweet pass even claro’, but he also inadvertently shows us one other thing and that is singing isn’t one of his strong points. His voice isn’t terrible by any means but I couldn’t help but notice that the sultry dedication to his sweetheart ‘Derinsola’ and the I-don’t-give-a-**** -if-you-leave-me ‘Replacement’, wouldn’t have sounded so lifeless had a Djinee or an Obiwon been singing them instead. It gets a lot worse for Steel when the penmanship that made ‘Omoge’ a moderate hit mysteriously disappears on the rest of ‘Mirage’. He hasn’t done anywhere near enough to capture the heart of the average Nigerian female, doesn’t Steel think dedicating an entire song and eventual single to ‘South African Girls’ was far too audacity. If confidence alone could make an album enjoyable, ‘Mirage’ would have been inline to be considered a classic, but it can’t. Steel’s vocal performance is questionable at best and his light weight lyrical ability conspires to produce one too many songs on ‘Mirage’ of filler-quality. In addition, with an abundance of supportive cast on his début album, the jury is still out on the man’s own ability.

OLU MAINTAIN – WITH ALL DUE RESPECT, PRESS PLAY

Having experienced his greatest post-Maintain chart success either being assisted (Yahoozee, Jedi Jedi) or playing assistant (Big Boy), Olu Maintain wasn’t one of them and thankfully, he doesn’t pretend to be. Introducing Olu’s newest money-making team – Kentro World. Kentro Crew consists of four young men namely Olu’s Hausa Lieutenant Bondo Krazzy, the Mayor of London Da Folz, Olu-badan DJ Freaky T and the Prime Minister Flo. Right from his days as one half of the popular group Maintain, you’d have to have an above decent sense of humour in order to fully enjoy Mr. Olu’s music; ‘With All Due Respects Press Play’ (WADRPP) is no different. But there are times when that sense of humour goes left, like on the meaningless IQ-reducing ‘Tomato’. While ‘Lady’ featuring the uber-talented Femi Kuti bore so much potential that when it ultimately disappointed it did so in the most painful fashion. As for ‘Arab Money’, I guess it’s one of those songs only the artiste himself can fully explain what was going through his mind when he penned the lyrics. At first glance, it’s easy to write off Kentro crew as a bunch of Olu’s friends who just happened to have stumbled into one or two of his recording sessions but if you listen closely, you may notice some hints of talent. The result is an album that has several bright spots but ultimately not nearly enough to save it from being sonically disorganized and lacking a true identity. After a few minutes listening to ‘(WADRPP)’, a few things are apparent – Bondo’s charisma is undeniable and DJ Freaky T provides fairly good lyrical humour and together, they balance out the uninspiring Da Folz and Flo who sound lost and in desperate need of artistic direction. It’s ironic that on a group effort where he’s supposed to be introducing his crew, Olu’s image looms so large throughout the album that he tucks each of his artistes firmly behind his shadow. If Olu hopes to release any solo albums from the members of Kentro crew immediately after WADRPP, he should be fully prepared for a disappointing outcome because with the exception of himself, we simply don’t know who Kentro really are, As a matter of fact, kentro family really need another introduction.

TERRY G – GINJAH UR SWAGGA (SEASON 1)

This album contains exactly two club hit song – “Halleluyah” and “Free Madness”, a song that will likely end up being banned in Nigeria over the airwaves due to its message. I don’t always agree with the criteria, with which media officials decide upon what records get banned, but this one seems like an easy one. The album did sound boring and monotonous after a while; a classic example of too much of something is not good. On the flip side, the album does contain some OK joints like “Ojukokoro”, “Fall in love”, “Bad Belle”, “Wine dey go” and “Bia Nulo”, which is a sample of Onyeka Onwenu’s version. We are to expect a season 2, God help us!

P SQUARE – DANGER

The album sold 2million copies in first two weeks of release; it’s just hearsay because that figure cannot be confirmed. Most of the tracks on this album were produced by Paul Okoye for Rudeboy productions except ‘E no easy’ produced by J martins,’ super fans’ by frenzy, ‘break it’ by Peter Okoye. This guys sure knows about beat from their dance track to their love songs. Even though this track is doing well in the market [nothing compared to their previous effort] but it remains the worst album from the duo. The video of danger reminded me of “Busta rhymes dangerous”. The beat and the tune of the track titled “who dey here” sounds like it is the remix of “Maino’s” hit single “all the above”. One would also notice that the album or their albums all sound so much alike [tonnes of music remaking], it’s like they found a comfort zone and they just decided to stay there. ‘Danger’ is a creatively written song in its right and insanely shot video. Well, we have only seen the video of danger and they didn’t dance at all so lets still keep our fingers crossed may be and just maybe they are tired of copying Michael Jackson’s dance moves.

STYL PLUS – BACK AND BETTER

After a short hiatus, abuja-based super group Styl Plus have quietly released their sophomore album, ‘Back & Better’. Styl-Plus are a breath of fresh air. First off, the Mekoyo produced ‘four years’ highlights the group’s struggle to remain together in this turbulent industry. But it’s on tracks like ‘I no want trouble’, ‘if you go’, and ‘i don tire’ that the group show their superior song-writing The group return to the infectious Yoruba hooks that made them popular in the first place. However, the experimental ‘candy man’ sounds drab while the Big Lo produced ’still gonna love you’ sounds rushed and both songs aren’t of the same quality as the rest of the album. In conclusion, the group still lack the power to break into the music scene as they did back then with ‘Olufunmi’, which gain international recognition. Styl Plus came back but not better. They have a new album ‘Unbreakable’ in stores – what do you think of the album?

ID CABASSA – ID ENTITY

ID makes ID- entity semi-enjoyable by overfilling it with real musicians, a record breaking 24 of them in total, and together they state a better case for Cabasa’s relatively virgin singing career. The only problem with inviting the entire population of Akoka and environs to IDentity is that, besides his production which was consistent to a good margin, ID loses the ability to determine the true quality of his own album. As a result, the outcome of IDentity is left squarely in the hands of its collaborators. ID takes a leaf from his friend 9ice’s book of proverbs and recites idioms and wise sayings at the slightest of provocations. Fair enough, these remixes became mere skits but it actually gets you wondering how much of this album actually ID’s idea was. To call this album his IDentity would be misleading. One can’t tell Cabassa’s true style of music. More fitting titles could have been ‘Akoka United’, ‘Coded Tunes compilation CD’ or ‘ID Cabasa & Friends’

JIM IYKE – WHO AM I

James Ikechukwu Esomugha is the undoubtedly one of the most controversial men to ever hit the big screen; The danger in hyping up a new artist so much is that people tend to expect perfection right off the bat. Jim wasn’t helped by the fact that he somehow contrived to do something no other Homo Sapient had done before him and that was to make a song with Tuface on it sound mediocre.If you persevered through that gibberish of an Intro, you would find an interesting listen in ‘Jimiykemania’. The only problem is if you take away the ever-impressive Sound Sultan and remove the deft board work from Puffy T, you are left with emcee Jim dropping lyrical gems such as ‘I’m smooth like a butterfly, sting like a dragon fly’. Really, Jim? Didn’t know Dragon flies stung people. The ironic thing is that one of the album’s weakest songs is also its lead single ‘Who Am I?’ featuring 2 Baba. As compensation for a poor showing however, Jim absolutely wows on the Mike Word-assisted ‘Born to do this’. Take Asher Roth, for instance. Roth gathered reams upon reams of hype prior to his official debut. Music mags dubbed him the “next big thing.” Hip-hop media crowned him the “white Lupe Fiasco.” That none of this is true doesn’t necessarily mean Roth isn’t worth his weight. Asher Roth’s problem, nonetheless you can quote me anywhere; with the probable exception of Osufia, this album is the most impressive crossover effort from a Nollywood actor yet. While it says a lot about Jim’s ‘ability’, it also has a lot to do with the bar being set so low by mediocre albums from Genevieve Nnaji, Omotola and everybody else in between. As much as I may hate to admit it, Jim has some music potential; he’ll just need someone to coach him on how to convert this potential into a solid album. Oh, and as for whom Jim Iyke truly is, I still haven’t got the slightest clue.

KEL – THE INVESTMENT

Kel writes, raps, sings and her looks is shockingly hot or make that was. As a new comer, nearly 97 percent of her album had guest appearances but I’ll pre-empt any criticisms by saying that the guest appearances make the album an exceptional debut for the Capital Hill artiste. On the last track of the album, Kel decided to auto-tuned that the digital pitch-correction device overshadows the message of the song. The T-Pain robot voice is so annoying that one could easily recommend Jay Z “D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)” to Miss Kel. Ill Bliss took control of the track with his not too complex punch lines, verbal wordplay, name dropping, and ability to grab-attention with his emphasizing voice. Kel wasn’t intimidated at all by Ill Bliss’s wordplay as she was just “packing what dudes are lacking”. Her first single, Waa wa Alright enjoyed a commercial boost and became an instant club hit. Her charming spitfire comes the familiar baggage – syrupy hooks and Headache-inducing dance beats. Some of the collaborations here could have easily been generated by randomly feeding names of high-profile artists through a hit-making machine.

9ICE – TRADITION
Remains one of Nigeria’s most original music makers as he is never short of his trademark proverbs, idioms and wise sayings. Tradition had a fair amount of it but it didn’t match up a follow up – probably we should blame the standard the ‘Gongo aso’ album set. A collaboration with Asa and Nneka should have served as but the outcome was more or less known. The question is what happened

BIGIANO – SHAYO MASTER
In Shayo Master [who is ever a master drunkard?], The beats are ful but Bigiano wanders through an extensive array of song topics so he seldom gets boring. Bigiano brought the catchiest choruses when he does it in Yoruba but overall his song writing skills is not to be bragged about. Listen to ‘No lele’ and ‘people suffering’ then we also battle with the packaging,the track list on the CD sleeve of the album is poorly arranged so tracks on the album’s playlist don’t match the ones on the CD’s track list.

SHANK – KING KONG
Shank was to introduce Nigeria to an upscale version of dancehall [nothing compared to Timaya and Terry G] with his single ‘julie’ but it fell flat. Hence King kong seem to be a ‘desperate ‘ attempt at recreating his club appeal. D’banj makes an appearance on a track that saw the only chemistry in the collaborations on the album. Akon and Shank on ’shawty’ lack chemistry. A reviewer says “Shank is simply too pop for traditional reggae and too reggae for traditional pop” of the album

Lagbaja’s least celebrated work is the double CD – sharp sharp and paradise. Did Lagbaja decline with with music making artistry? no, that’s not in question but The music audience was not ready for Lagbaja’s new album. The very fault if the masked one retaining the afrocentric touch in an uncommon music genre – Jazz, as some would convenient want to classify Lagbja’s music. The review was a ‘conscious international effort with delibrate commercial pull for the home front.’ but Lagbaja would agree that the buzz probably blame it on his publicist or the media

Well we hope they are gonna make a full come back with a better hit for their next album, meanwhile we are expecting A2 BrothazZ (Afro-Asian BrothazZ) album "Best of Both Worlds" to hit the Market as soon as it drops, i was opportuned to listed to the tracks and i must say i am very impressed with all what i heared, these guys are talented, all their track are hits on that album, i can't wait for it to drop... am gonna buy mine for me and my family, coz its worth the effort.

Alaba Nigerian “King Of Pirates” Arrested

A breakthrough appears imminent in the war declared by the Nigerian Music Industry Coalition on the piracy scourge at the notorious Alaba International Market in Lagos . On November 23, 2009, many of the traders at the market were stunned when a team of policemen swooped on the self styled “King of Pirates”, Mr. Tony Onwujekwe of Shop AB2 Ubakason Plaza. Until his arrest, Mr. Onwujekwe had been considered untouchable and was alleged to have carried on his piracy business with flamboyance and devil-may-care self assurance.

The raid on Mr. Onwujekwe also called “Eze Ndi Awalawa” followed a report made by Mr. Peter Divine Okah of Divine Trust Concept Limited, a member of Music Label Owners & Recording Industries Association of Nigeria (MORAN), one of the associations in the Nigerian Music Industry Coalition which is also represented on the Board of Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON). When the doors to the warehouse of the “King of Pirates” at Alaba were swung open, the police were confronted with thousands of pirated copies of the works of practically every top artiste and producer in the land. Mr. Onwujekwe was first taken to Ojo Alaba Police Station and the case which was initially transferred to Panti CID in Yaba is now being handled by the Special Unit at Force Headquarters, Kam Salem House, Obalende Lagos.
During the meeting of the Board of Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) which held on November 25 in Lagos , Hon. John. E. Udegbunam, National President, Music Label Owners & Recording Industries Association of Nigeria (MORAN) briefed members of the Board on the developments in the matter. It was resolved that every step be taken by the Nigerian Music Industry Coalition and COSON to ensure that the “King of Pirates” does not escape justice.

In line with above decision, the firm of G.O. Sodipo & Co., one of Nigeria’s topmost firms of intellectual property lawyers, has been appointed by the industry to follow the land mark case closely and to ensure that no stone is left unturned to bring the suspected king pin of piracy and his cohorts to book.

Determined to finally smash the piracy cabal at Alaba, the Nigerian Music Industry Coalition has also written separate letters to the Inspector-General of Police and the Director-General, Nigerian Copyright Commission on the case. All relevant officials of the government including President Yar’Adua, the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Attorney General of the Federation and the Minister of Information and Communication have also been notified of the case.

In the letter to the Inspector-General of Police requesting the “full scale” prosecution of Mr. Tony Onwujekwe alias “King of Pirates” the coalition recounted the several activities embarked upon in recent months by the music industry to draw the attention of the nation to the devastation caused the Nigerian creative community by the massive piracy going on at Alaba Market. In particular, the coalition mentioned the World Press Conference, the National Anti-Piracy Rally, the Mass Hunger Strike, the “No Music Day” Campaign and the recent Stake Holders Forum in Lagos .

In the letter signed by frontline officials of the coalition such as Ms. Onyeka Onwenu, Mr. Efe Omorogbe, Chief Tony Okoroji, Mr. Toju Ejuetitchie and Mr. Laolu Akins, the coalition wrote “We wish to inform you that the arrest of Mr. Onwujekwe in the month of November 2009, the month that the Nigerian music industry resolved to bring down the notorious Alaba piracy, has been a source of wide jubilation in our industry. There is however growing concern in our industry that the case of the “King of Pirates” may be botched and this great opportunity to start the flushing out of the criminals that have held Nigeria ’s creative industries down may be lost”

In continuation, the coalition wrote, “We wish to make it clear that the entire music industry in Nigeria is watching this matter carefully. We are also notifying our colleagues around the world. We believe that there is abundant evidence to begin the full prosecution of Mr. Tony Onwujekwe and his cohorts immediately and to make them red hot examples in the war against piracy and counterfeiting in Nigeria . Nigerian musicians, young and old and the music industry will find it very difficult to accept any excuse for the tardy handling of this matter and we are resolved and will spare no effort to ensure that whoever may be involved in plotting an escape route from justice for Mr. Tony Onwujekwe gets everything that he or she deserves”

In conclusion, the coalition requested the Inspector- General to use his good offices to ensure that the best officers are assigned to the case immediately and that all the agencies of government that need to work together to conclude the matter be brought together immediately. Said the coalition, “this case is absolutely important to the future of the thousands of people who depend on our industry for their livelihood”.

"Awww how cool! Rihanna is talking about me! She must be talking about how more women who have been in Domestic Violence cases should really support one another!"

I only thought she might have said something like that because recently TMZ asked me about Rihanna and I said that I have nothing against her but that it would send out a nice message if she could speak out about her case and give other victims more hope & feel like they are not alone. Bistop of Bracket finally came out of his shell and opened up

I remember when i was having a chit chat with Vast of Bracket when i was asking what happened to Bistop of Bracket, their Manager came to take over and answered the questioned, and he said Bistop had other things to take care of and that he has moved on to take care of other things but there was no misunderstanding in the group.

And to my greatest shock, today we got the real News... and the truth has been heard.....

Here is what Bistop says...

Jealousy came from my group cos I’ve got more swagga. Ego came from our sponsor cos I was my group’s leader in decision-making. He used money to make my group (Bracket) betray me because he sees me as a threat to his harsh ways of conduct. They betrayed me after after ten years of being together. They call me BISTOP, the origin of bracket and presently the owner of the newest single on air called ‘’’CELEBRATE’’’. I call that song “CELLEBRATE”” because it’s a breakthrough for me. I was never given the chance to express what happened to me in my group. They blocked every chance for me to seek the press or media, constantly feeding the masses and my fans with huge lies that I dropped out of the group because of academic pressure, parental pressure and most of all, they said I was never serious with the group’s reheasals etc.

My beautiful people, all you heard were all lies. I was forced into going solo after a 90% near to completion of “ least expected’” (Bracket’s most recent album). They laid allegation behind me, made their judgment behind me and made their decision behind me. By deleting my voices from my songs, sold it to a marketer, went for concerts without giving me a dime from ten years of my sweat. I remember when I’d call their phone, they would not pick up, out of trying to shut me out from being heard from, but now, they call my phone trying to seek a way to make me not release the song CELEBRATE on air. I said to them, “nothing personal, I have to tell the world what you did to me” I was not meant to make it but here I am and I promise you in three years from now, the name BISTOP will be a brand that will open most doors.

Pussycat Dolls boss: 'The girls aren't splitting up'

Pussycat Dolls founder Robin Antin has again dismissed reports the girl group has split, despite overnight stories suggesting singer Nicole Scherzinger is no longer in contact with the rest of the band.

Antin has laughed off all rumours suggesting the band is no more and she issued a new statement on Wednesday, to deny the latest one.

In the missive she sent to website HollyScoop.com, she writes, "The Pussycat Dolls are very much ALIVE and there is NO truth to the silent treatment statements.

"Nicole and the Dolls have ALWAYS been close. Nicole is and always has been a strong creative force within this group and I cherish the way we collaborate."

The sexy pop stars decided to take a break from performing together earlier this year amid rumours of in-fighting and jealousy aimed at frontwoman Nicole Scherzinger from other members of the group.

Bandmember Kimberly Wyatt recently insisted the Pussycat Dolls brand would always continue, despite differences of opinion between the girls.

But sources tell New York Post gossip column Page Six that the stars are preparing to announce an official split, because they have all turned their backs on Scherzinger.

An insider tells the publication, "It is war. They have broken up for good. None of the other girls are speaking to Nicole, who they believe took the limelight, then went off to do her own thing."

Gone are the days when Malaysia was no where to be found in the Global Music Industry.
Sometimes, many people kill your spirit when you hear about what our people have been doing here… A lot of favours have been turned down to non-talented Arabs rather than been an African. It weakens my spirit but it almost time all this will be over.
If anyone can hit any of Malaysian radio station he don he’s made for life; much less an African.
Some brothers said we are wasting our time, but we gonna keep on trying, because 5yrs ago it wasn’t like this in Malaysia ... We are getting there…
We can overtake them if there is great supports of funds…trust me!
Malaysia is all about money and u gonna get what you want and in that case, you need to get a Chinese...
Malays are fine with there credit life... lol…

It was a meeting of foreign DJs in Malaysia to submit their mix for radio show and they didn’t say anything in English... but, qualifying' me as a Negro ... because I was the only African DJ there...lol
They accepted 13 DJ mixes in total from 13 DJs, with my mix …
They didn’t even listen to my mix to know what inside; they returned it to me for non-parented and non-understandable tracks which could tally there image.
All tracks in my mix are clean version ... do you know the other 12 which are like Europeans, Arabs and 2 Australians...They accepted them and smile and said they are gonna get back to em' in a week, and mine was returned back in just 5min received ...
Well, one of the Arab guys that understood Malay told me they said Africans are not approved to make any inclusion with there country in any ways!
Tell me... if we as Africans here in Malaysia are not really wasting our time.
You see all these clubs and shit... They just wanna use us to make money and nothing else.
No promo, neither do they care about what you need for that show or party... just come and do your shit and bounce off!

Susan Boyle album 'sales bonanza'

The 48-year-old Britain's Got Talent runner-up shifted more than 130,000 copies of her debut album as it went on sale yesterday.

Experts at the Official Charts Company said it is now set to become one of the fastest sellers of the decade.

I Dreamed A Dream looks to be on track to vie for the accolade of having this year's biggest first week sale, a record held by JLS for their self-titled which sold over 230,000 copies earlier this month.

The album features her version of I Dreamed A Dream from Les Miserables which catapulted her to fame when she performed the song on Britain's Got Talent which left judges agog at her voice.

It also includes the standard Cry Me A River, as well as covers of Madonna's You'll See and The Monkees' Daydream Believer.

She said: "It was my greatest ambition to release an album and I have finally achieved it. There is happiness out there for everyone who dares to dream."

Susan launched her album with a performance on The X Factor on Sunday during which she sang her version of The Rolling Stones song Wild Horses.

Music retailer HMV said initial sales from the chain and other entertainment retailers suggested SuBo's debut album has been selling an amount that most major new albums would typically sell in a week.

HMV is now also predicting that the album will be the Christmas No 1.

Rumours surfaced alleging the Umbrella beauty was more than just the rapper's business acquaintance when she first made it into the industry.

And even Rihanna's close friends in her native Barbados believed she'd jumped into bed with Jay-Z to seal the deal - but she insists she was never romantic with the hip-hop star.

She says, "It was like: 'Of course she had to give Jay-Z oral sex to get that deal.' That rumour was everywhere in Barbados and it was so disgusting. It made me feel really weird. I would even be weird around Jay-Z. I wouldn't be able to look him in the eye.

"One day, he called and he was like, 'Yo, you can't buy into these rumours. You can't let people move you with anything they say.' The rumours got very funny to me after that.

Nollywood actor, Nkem Owoh “Osuofia” regains freedom after N1.4m ransom

Six days after he was seized on the Port Harcout-Enugu Expressway, the popular Nollywood actor, Nkem Owoh, aka Osuofia, on Saturday regained freedom from his abductors.

Owoh‘s freedom was said to have been negotiated by members of his family who paid N1.4m, SUNDAY PUNCH gathered.

The kidnappers, however, continue to hold on to the actor‘s car pending the payment of N100,000 balance, a member of the family told SUNDAY PUNCH on the condition of anonymity.

The source said the family could only raise N1.4m out of the N1.5m demanded by the kidnappers.

Our correspondent gathered that the family members pleaded with the abductors to release his vehicle but all efforts proved abortive.

It would be recalled that the actor was abducted on Monday when a gang of kidnappers reportedly blocked his car as he made his way towards a film location in Enugu.

Owoh was said to have been in his country home in Enugu, the Enugu State capital, when he called his Personal Assistant, Mr. Cino, who was in Lagos, to inform him of his intention to go to Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

Shortly after, another call was reportedly put across to his Personal assistance, Cino, this time by a man who claimed to be a member of a gang that kidnapped Owoh.

The kidnappers‘ original demand was N15m, but the ransom was said to have been negotiated to N1.5m, out of which the family was said to have paid the N1.4m.

It seems the Next Line of Business in Naija now is to be Kidnapping Business! People Watch out!

Beyonce delays Malaysia show amid Islamic criticism

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — R&B star Beyonce Knowles has postponed a planned concert in Malaysia, the event's organizer said Monday, following accusations by Islamic conservatives that the show would be immoral.

Knowles, known for her provocative clothes and choreography, had been scheduled to perform at a Kuala Lumpur stadium Oct. 25. The show "has been postponed to a future date to be announced shortly," Malaysian entertainment company Marctensia said in a statement.

"The postponement is solely (the) decision of the artist and has nothing to do with other external reasons," the statement said.

A Marctensia representative declined to say whether the decision was prompted by criticism from the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, the country's largest opposition group, which has called for the show to be scrapped because it would promote "Western sexy performances."

Knowles also canceled a planned performance in Malaysia in 2007 following protest threats by the opposition Islamic party. At the time, her talent agency said the show was called off due to a scheduling conflict.

Instead, Knowles went to Indonesia, also a largely Muslim country, which has less stringent rules about how performers should dress and behave. Female artists at Malaysian concerts are required by government rules to cover up from the shoulders to knees, with no cleavage showing.

Last month, Marctensia addressed concerns that Knowles might wear inappropriate outfits, saying "all parties have come to an amicable understanding" about stage costumes.

Other female pop stars such as Avril Lavigne and Gwen Stefani have performed in Malaysia despite similar protest threats by conservative Muslims. Both singers wore clothes that revealed little skin.

Some entertainment industry officials say the strict regulations and frequent controversies have

discouraged many international artists from visiting Malaysia.

The self-proclaimed “Ambassador of Rap for the Capital,” Washington, D.C.-based rapper Wale (pronounced “wah-lay”) was able to transcend his local sensation status and become a national rap contender using go-go-inspired hip-hop as the vehicle for his lyricism and clever wordplay.

Olubowale Victor Folarin was born in D.C. in 1984 to Nigerian immigrants who first arrived to America five years prior. Moving to Maryland at age ten, however, Wale was mostly raised in suburban D.C. He attended both Robert Morris College and Virginia State University on football scholarships, but then transferred a third time to Bowie State.
The music bug already had bit him hard, and soon he quit Bowie State to turn towards a recording career.

Wale got his first airplay circa 2003-2004 with “Rhyme of the Century,” thanks to the help of a local radio DJ who believed in his potential. This landed him in the “Unsigned Hype” column in Source magazine the following year.
In 2006, Wale signed to local start-up imprint Studio 43, owned by a former VP of Roc-a-Fella Records, and enjoyed a string of hits in the D.C.-Maryland-Virginia area that year.
Many of those records sampled from ’80s go-go, a more raw, percussion-driven offshoot of disco originating in D.C., like the popular “Dig Dug,” a tribute to Ronald “Dig Dug” Dixon of go-go band the Northeast Groovers.
